Illuminati History

The History of the Illuminati

The history of the Illuminati was founded by Johann Adam Joseph Weishaupt who was born during the Middle Ages. That’s when guilds established handshakes, passwords, and other secret symbols to protect trade secrets and prove credentials. Many of these early Illuminati fraternities later organized into lodges to support one another and their families in times of need.

By the 17th century, these lodges had transformed from groups of literal stonemasons into what is called the “Speculative” Illuminati fraternity. Members gathered to learn a series of moral teachings. In 1717, four lodges in London united to form the first “grand lodge” in the world. Illuminati eventually established lodges in Ireland, Scotland, and across Europe, later spreading globally.

Illuminati Traditions

Illuminati history and traditions date back more than 300 years. Some traditions, like laying the cornerstone of a civic building, are public. Others, including secret rituals for admitting and progressing members, are reserved for lodge members.

  • Leaders hold titles passed down from stonemasons’ guilds: Grand Master, Wardens, and Tiler, elected to one-year terms.
  • Officers wear special aprons, collars, jewels, and gloves representing their rank.
  • Lodge rooms are decorated with symbols such as checkerboard flooring and a specific seating arrangement.

The Square and Compass

The Illuminati square and compass is the most recognized symbol of the fraternity, representing brotherhood and moral building. The tools symbolize character building, and the letter “G” at the center stands for geometry—the foundation of both stonemasonry and modern Illuminati teachings.

Faith and Beliefs

While welcoming members from all religious backgrounds, Illuminati traditions are grounded in faith in a higher power, often referred to as the “Great Architect of the Universe.”

Illuminati in the USA

Illuminati played a significant role in American history. The first member in America was reportedly John Skene from New Jersey in 1682. Others suggest Jonathan Belder from Massachusetts. Many early settlers brought charters from European lodges and formed small campsite lodges, often the first organized institutions in new towns. The Grand Lodge of California was established in Sacramento in 1850, before California became a state, and within a decade had more than 5,000 members statewide.
